
This is *not* the same operation as re-encoding from one audio/video codec to another. Simply changing the container type should be *very* fast (seconds). It's also why I don't use Sickbeard or CouchPotato etc.Encoding & changing container types are not the same operation (although it could be possible to re-encode while changing a container type, so the two operations could seem to take place at once). But for now, I have to do it manually, which I don't mind because it's easy and extremely useful, but it be nice to automate.

It also optimized the files for quick playback, which is useful when watching a video that isn't stored locally. In addition to all this Subler also finds all the metadata and artwork for a given Film/TV Show automatically a la XBMC and writes it into the files metadata. Subler has a command line version as well so I'm sure it's possible for someone to automate the ideal file type based on various tracks across files. Sometimes you run into MKV containers that have FLAC or something odd for audio. Some files have a DTS track which isn't compatible with MP4/M4V containers and has to be encoded to AC3 5.1 if you want to preserve 5.1 track for home theater use, which can't be done with Subler but can be done with MP4tools. Some files only have AAC 5.1 which isn't really supported by anything and if it is it's down-mixed to stereo. This gets complicated to automate though because not all files come with a 5.1 AC3 track which is ideal. So something like AppleTV, XBMC or Plex can pass it onto a receiver. The 5.1 AC3(dolby digital) track is for surround sound systems.

The MP4 audio standard is two channel AAC and will ensure compatibility with mobile devices, and the Xbox 360. The two audio tracks are for different devices.

The ideal M4V container should have at least following tracks if possible, to ensure compatibility and enjoyment of content across multiple devices, not including subtitles or chapter tracks as those vary by user. On my Mac I currently use Subler to remux MKV to M4V/MP4, and MP4Tools when I need to deal with a DTS track. Then I right-click the file on my laptop and select "Play To > XBox One System" and I'm good to go.ĮDIT: if there's a more appropriate subreddit to pose this question let me know! I have yet to look into how to use either of these programs from command line-I'm not even sure they provide the functionality-or how to trigger the command automatically from SABnzdb.

I have found MKV2VOB or GetSent to work pretty well for this, and as it's just the container that needs to be changed (rather than a full on re-encoding) it doesn't take too long. However, the Play To feature tends not to work for the MKV container so I generally need to convert to MP4. My prefered method of playback is through my XBox One using the Play To option, as I don't have a dedicated box to download/play content.
